Harder starting after running for awhile

1600 Nomad runs strong but after running awhile and stopping for a break, it takes more cranks for the engine to turn over. Any ideas?

Hey brother......

A number of years old. Seems to crank plenty fast enough. Just takes extra cranks to start after warm.

Norm I guess you're thinking the reason is starter turning slower because battery may not be up to where it should be. Is that where you're going? Why when cold does it start quicker if that's the case.

Well first I was just trying to establish if the battery was something to look at. Older batterys put out less umph and on these FI bikes, despite the starter cranking the engine a what appears to be a decent speed, there needs to be enough juice left for spark and injectors. If in fact a weaker battery is the cause, a possible explanation could be higher resistance in electrical connections when everything is hot. One could get a better idea by testing the voltage of the battery with a multi meter, after several hrs rest, while cranking cold and then while cranking hot.

If its still cranking fast, but makes a few more turns at the crank before it catches, I'd lean out my efi controller when starting. Also, I'd give the engine a good basic tuneup. Most common causes of this is buildup in the fuel system....a can or 2 of seafoam should cure that, with a plug and air filter cleaning....
Also, test the battery like they said. The ign system is voltage sensitive....not enough, it'll run crappy or not run at all....

Which fuel module do you have?

The PC III-V are known to not fire the injectors until pressure has built up? but it sometimes won’t realize the pressure never dropped, thus not allowing the injectors to fire.

After the engine goes through enough rpms to alleviate the fuel pressure it will fire the injectors.

Sometimes with a good bang.

I had 2 MeanStreaks like that.

I have the Dobeck TFI. I'm going to check the battery the next time I get a chance to ride for a few hours.

12.5 to 12.7 is normal at rest, what you want to see next is what the voltage drops to while starting it both cold and again when hot

Put seafoam in tank as I haven't done it for awhile. Purchased new battery and installed it.
Didn't realize how slow engine was turning because it always started right up when cold. Even though it seemed to crank ok I now realize the NAD needed a new battery. Runs better and issues seem to have been corrected. TY all (Norm). (I could probably start a diesel truck now.......)
