The Nad is coughing....

Bike question...

My bike idles fine but when I give her some throttle she coughs and dies. I heard it could be the fuel pump or the fuel filter. Any suggestions?

Hi, It sounds like a fuel problem to me. Enough fuel to tickover but not enough when you give it throttle. Does the Nomad have a fuel filter ? If so I would be checking that first, and the air filter. I would think if you are getting enough fuel to tickover then the fuel pump is working ?

carbed bike right? Is the fuel pump running? Can you hear it?

I have no idea if there is a filter on a carbed bike or not, of so the best thing to do if there is over 5,000 miles on it, is to replace it. If you don't want to do that see if it is clogged by adding some tubing to the inlet when the filter is off the bike and blow thru it..

I can't say if there are any tubing for engine vacuum off the carb to the engine or not, but if there is, look very closely to see if either ends are brittle, loosened, cracked or plain just blown off from a cough/backfire.

Make sure you see the back sides of these hoses at the fittings too. long term weathering and high temps will in tume ruin any vac line.

And if you replaced any vac line with anything for something else like fish tank tubing, fuel line and other not real vac line it will such shut.

Hows things with you anyway, as i recall you got a LEO job and were happy about it.

I'm bettin' you got some crap in your carbs. Coughing when getting on it is almost always plugged carb orifices somewhere. Idle, needle or main jet. Replace all the filters and pull the carbs and go through it. carbs are not that hard to tear down.

+1
Check the fuel line and fuel pump. It's located right under the tank and pulling the tank on a carbed Nomad is too easy. There is also a fuel filter near the pump.
Then, as BD says breakdown your carb (there's only one) Shouldn't be too bad of a job and I'm betting you'll have her purring again in no time.

Thanks for the info guys. Whether I'm easing into it or throttling down, she still coughs. I took it to a local wrench that the Blue Knights here in Laredo recommended and he took her out of a test drive. He mostly works on Harleys but he just couldn't believe how fast and responsive the Nad was! His diagosis from the ride is that she's starving for gas so it could also be a jet catching trash aside from the filter and pump. But we'll see. I just called him and told him what yall recommended and he said he was gonna on all that too. Thanks again guys!

P.S. I got the job with the Border Patrol here in Laredo and its been Grade A stuff since I got the job. For the first time, (second only to the first 2 yrs in the Army) I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that I absolutely love my job.

So long as there is a working filter and the pump runs, BD has gotta be right and crud came to be in the carb.. To me you still need to make sure there is fuel flow before you open the carb, but there is fuel flow..

As to the job which i asked about, it's nice to see that sort of story happen. Glad you like the work. Hope you do a long time..

Well, got word from the local wrench that she was working fine when he test rode her. But for $125, he'll tear open the carb and clean everything out. What do yall think? Picking her up tomorrow and cleaning out the fuel filter. Any idea where I can buy one?

Cabby as usual i don't know what the filter is like. I have never worked on a carbed Nomad.

A dealer would be able to get one, but maybe a car parts store can too. If you can see it and get numbers off it, or find the Kawii part number you might run the number at a auto store and see if they can cross referance the filter to someting common, like we do for after market oil filters.
