Can-Am Spyder Rally at MV after KawaNOW 2011

Saw an article yesterday in Rider Magazine about the International Can-Am Rally in Maggie Valley that began the day after ours ended. Over 400 Spyders came in. We saw a few.

So they've sold 400 of them? The following week, they had the HoverRound rally there.

we have alot of them in our area. i would like to ride one. they are a real piece of engineering. kind of short on motor size for something that heavy. how about a new concours four tuned for lowend torque. i saw a guy ream one out and it was'nt to impressive. the touring version with passenger and trailer would have to be a real pooch with only 900 cc's.

I think that CJ is having Harley regret when he really wanted a HoverRound. ::)

The motor is around 998cc which seemed small to me also. The horse-power is rated to nearly 100 HP; which if you compare what a 1600cc motorcycle motor's HP is rated... BRP appears to be getting more power out of their smaller motor.

When I drove one two-up it didn't seem too bad on power -- certainly not as bad as I thought. They claim 0 to 60 in 4.5 seconds on the touring model; which is plenty of pick-up for my use; but I would agree it would be better with a slightly larger motor.

The engine is a 998cc Rotax 60° v-twin, built in Austria.

The Rotax is known to be a good engine. It is used in all of Bombardier's recreational vehicles (ATV's, snowmobiles, Spyder, and small air-craft).

Its reliability meets air-craft engine standards, which are fairly high standards to meet. I don't believe my HD's engine or the Nomad engine would meet certification standards for such use. Just saying... ;)

BMW riders seem to have some respect for the engine, as they generally have favorable comments about it. I am positive BMW used a Rotax-designed engine in one of their bike-models. (Ponch could be more specific about that.)

Regarding it being a 998cc motor; I wouldn't standardize the horse-power by the amount of cc's it has. Some engine generate more horse-power with less... and apparently this is one of those engines.

It particularly wants to be ran at high RPM's... 5,000 RPM's isn't anything for this engine to handle for long hours at a time. It doesn't exactly get good gas-mileage though. Most say they get anywhere from 25-30 MPG... ouch!

The main reason the Beemer guys like the Rotax is that they are made in Austria. Thay are very well designed motors, Ive had a lot of them in my snowmobiles over the years.
