Starting Problem
2008 1600 Nomad, 51000 miles....
With the weather lately I typically go out and give the Nomad a start up and let her run for about 5 to 10 minutes. Last week the weather got up into the 50s and I took her out with no problem. Today I went to start her up and no go. She turns over, she some times spits and sputters like she is going to start but does not. The temp today was a high of 15 degrees in sunny Cincinnati. I have cranked and cranked with no luck. So I cranked up the heat in the shed for about an hour to help get her at least warmed up some. I have noticed that each time I start her the display on the speedo goes blank but to be honest I never noticed it before. I also notice that after each start up attempt it acts like it is doing a reset. Ya know where the speedo needle jumps far right and then back. The battery after about 30 minutes of trying is showing signs of weakness and now is on a charger. New this past summer battery BTW. I am not the starting fluid kind of guy so I did not do this. So what do you think? Fuel line freeze up? Bad ECU? Just too darn cold? As I mentioned last weekend she started and rolled just fine. It has been below 25 for the last week and the last few days near 5 to 8 degrees. Let me know if I can offer more info. Thanks All

Its time to replace the battery, those are the tell tale signs of what it does with a weak battery.

It's your battery. It doesn't matter if you just bought it yesterday, it's toast.

It can have enough voltage to spin the starter, but not enough to fire the ECM.
If it falls below 11.? volts the ECM will not send the signal to actually start. What battery did you buy? I had a couple of them last a year or less. You can't beat an actual Yuasa. MT

Mas
I've not had a chance to check voltage yet but will once I do a recharge. I did not know about the needed voltage for the ecu, thanks. Don't remember brand but it had several good reviews some of which were on this forum. I will check name and get back to you

Site does state battery should be charged during " prolonged" storage period.
Looks like you have one year to replace it. http://www.bikemaster.com/batteries/batteries.html

Seems that most of the trouble with replacement batteries posted here are off brand "cheaper" batteries. This is one place I have found that there is no replacement for quality batteries and tires. If one or the other fails, you aren't going anywhere. How much is peace of mind worth ???
