Bafflectomy problems...

I have drilled out the baffle with the 1-3/4" hole saw, and the end of the baffle is completely loose, but I can't pull the baffle out for anything. I've tried clamping needle nose vise grips on the end, gripping the side of the vise grips with large Channellocks, and banging on the Channellocks with a framing hammer to loosen the opposite end of the baffle, but to no avail. Any tips on what I need to do to get these off??

This seem to happen a lot. I used a inside pipe wrench and twisted them loose, kind of like unthreading them. Others have used a slide hammer or fabricated some like one to pull them out. I really think if you can wedge something in the and twist them first they will come out.

Thumbs Up

The longer they're in there, the harder they are to get out. I did mine on my 06 a month ago w/ 65,000 miles on it, and I was sure I must have done something wrong. Keep pulling, twisting, yanking, etc. and suddenly it will come loose. Be sitting in a chair at the time so you don't wind up on your ass. Then have a well deserved beer.

That's almost a 9 year old bike. Lots of carbon built up in those baffles.

Thanks for the encouragement. I needed the assurance that I wasn't screwing something up! I used a hexagon shaped, pointed air hammer chisel, and drove it into the baffle, then put an 18" pipe wrench on it. Had to do it several times both ways, to finally get it loose. Sounds great now. Thanks again!

By the way, plumber63, what's the 63 stand for? I've been a plumber for 37 years, born in 1964.....

My brother-in-law was a plumber, and I started working summers and after school for him when I was 14. Passed my Journeyman license test when I was 19, passed my Masters test when I was 21, started my own company that same year, 1986. Still in business today. Some days it seems like it's been forever!

I just did mine yesterday on an 03 nomad. I locked on a pair of vice grips, slid a large allen key through the eye on the adjustment screw, slid a pipe over the allen key, and then beat it with a sledge. took about 15 min on one and 2 on the other. My biggest problem was I drilled through the first pipe in about 3 minutes...the other took over an hour before I just went to home Depot and bought a new bit. the sound all in all is what I expected. just a bit deeper and sounds more like a motorcycle than a moped.

I'm getting a lot of decal popping, no good....but the sound when I'm on the gas is great. is there a happy medium? Would some V&H tame the pop?
