Kick stand extender

I am feeling my 67 years more than ever and picking my new favorite 850 pound bike, my Nomad, up off the kickstand is wearing on these old joints. The friend who I just rode to the northern Yukon with bolted a hockey puck to his BMW Airhead 100GS PD KS to resolve the same problem. I'd consider that but am open to suggestions on alternative methods to get the bike more upright on the kickstand. A little help from my forum friends please.

I used a piece of horse stall mat (about 1" thick) and cut it to match the footprint of the kickstand. Two screws up thru the kickstand foot and it's good to go. It's been on the bike for about 7 years and it's starting to wear a bit thin. Might have to replace it soon.

The older 1500 Nomads and classics had a longer stand. When I traded up from my 99 1500 Nomad to an 09 1700 Nomad which had a shorter stand ,I got on E-Bay and found one from an older bike. Worked perfectly.

Duffy, I no longer have horses but that's a good idea. 1 inch is just about right. I think that's about the thickness of a hockey puck but I like the idea of the mat. Those were not around in the 60s when we had Quarter Horses but I've seen that mat locally at some of the equestrian centers. The guy who owned one of them said they were made in Canada of old tires.

Kerry, I did a web search for a 1500 kickstand and found nothing but that's a moving opportunity. Will keep checking.

Not sure what you ride Navigator, but if the stand on your kawasaki measures 11 and 1/4 Inches from the end of the tang to the top of the stand , then you would benifit from using a stand from an older model classic or nomad. They are about an inch longer. Go to "kawasaki 1500 kick stand" on Ebay.

Again thanks guys. How odd that is. I did an ebay search and came up with zip and there are several for sale.

I bought a hockey puck (Ducks) for $7.00 and sat it on the puck. Perfect. A riding friend, and also a Vulcan rider, who works in the shipping industry told me to take it back because he has piles of UMHD (Ultra Molecular High Density) plastic scraps in all shapes, sizes and thicknesses so he is going to bring me a couple of pieces for an interim fix. It can be cut, drilled/tapped etc.

The best fix it seems is a 1500 kickstand so I'll get on ebay in a minute or two and order one. And yes, installing a kickstand can be a real bitch. I've done it on numerous vintage Triumphs and it is never a favorite pastime.

Oh and this is for my 2007 Nomad 1600.

I got a kickstand from a vulcan 800, took it to a welder had them turn a stub and weld it on for the shut off kill switch. installed it using the spring from the 800. Sets the bike up like having about a 2" block under old one. It about 3" longer than the stock one.

Tip I learned if you turn the bars full lock right be for you pull the bike off the stand it take away most of the weight

I too did this. You can find an 800 kickstand and spring on eBay for next to nothing. When you are done, offer your old one up to help recoup the cost of the welding. Mine works great but be aware of where you park. Not nearly as much lean. The link is here:

This is very good tip. Works real well.
I didn't change mine because of not being able to lift it, I Just didn't like it leaning that far over.
One thing I notice it changes how the gas tank fills up, because it sits closer to level you need to fill up into the neck more to get a full tank. When you think its full it will take almost another 1/2 gallon.

Just an FYI.........I have a 1500 Classic and the kickstand is too short also. The fix for mine (if I wasn't using the rubber pad) is to use a 1500 Drifter kick stand. It's a bit longer than the Classic. I'm not sure about a Nomads.

I just rode to Salmon Arm for the Kootenay gathering and the leaning issue was a significant problem for me. This was my first trip on my Nomad and every time I stopped for fuel it was a chore. In the front of the motel where the bikes were parked one of our members had barked his pristine '04 1500 next to a 1600 and the difference in the lean angle was apparent.

When we returned to my riding buddy's Castlegar home he pulled a hockey puck (former player and ref) out of his stash of 15 or so, drilled two holes in the kickstand foot and affixed the puck. The one inch difference for me is amazing. It is no longer a struggle to bring the bike up off the kickstand but rather a matter of just standing it up.

I had intended to shape the puck to fit the kickstand foot but will leave it as is. It might look a little funky but in addition to making the bike sit more upright, it provides a good pad for when putting the stand down in soft surfaces, asphalt in summer etc. And with the strong spring it doesn't bounce at all when I hit bumps. It is simple and works.

Today while riding down a country road I needed to make a fast pull over to quickly park on the slope along side of the highway. As I kicked the stand down on the uphill side of the slope I thought to myself I'm glad its not extended.

Good mod for some but I think I'll pass on this one.
