Hill Country riding

Planning to haul bikes down to the Texas Hill Country in February (after Feb. 10) for a 3 or 4 day ride. Will be 3 of us from southern Wi. & northern IL. This will be a spur of the moment trip (going to watch the weather). Will take us a day and a half to get there. Planning to stay in Kerrville and ride mostly south and west from there. Will ride the 3 sisters for sure. Just wondering if anyone would be interested in meeting up and riding with us. We are all in our 50`s but experienced riders. All on Cruisers.

When we were there this past April we stayed at the Holiday Inn Express.
It's near the intersection on TX 16 and I-10. It was nice but a bit pricey.
There was a Best Western next door that seemed to be popular with other riders.

KURT44, Here's a M/C friendly place Best Western Sunday House Inn. They let many of us park our m/c in front of our rooms and on the back side near the pool. "Out of site out of mind." Now your visit in Feb. is going to be touch and go because the it can be covered with ice inch thick or sunny. Ley us know when you are going to be here and if the weather permits we can ride with you or have a meal some where. TXVROC have members there. There's a few of us in the Austin area and have "Snowbirds" come down and we ride with many times. like dabull said May is a little better time. So bring your northern riding gear.

I rode the Three Sisters in Feb of last year when I went thru Texas (stayed in Killeen for a few weeks). Nice ride, horrible cell service.

Thanks for your replies. Yeah, as I said we will watch the weather. Found a lot of good info on hill country cruising web site. Only needs to be in the 60's and we'll be happy.

Hi Kurt44,
Very, very noble of you guys to try and ride the Hill Country in Feb. But, if you can wait until (at least) the end of March, you'll have a much better experience on the trip.

February is notorious for rain, ice and some snow in that part of Texas. If it rains even a little bit (and we've received a ton of rain so far this year) you can effectively kiss the twisted sisters goodbye as far as riding them safely. And the chances of the temp being in the 60's is almost null. I ride the Hill Country (Kerrville, Leakey, Bandera, Medina, etc) every year in the Spring or the Fall. It's one of my favorite places to ride, but I wouldn't dare try it in Feb.

Just some friendly advice... not trying to tell you what to do.

Trip

PS. Feel free to view my riding map for Texas where I list the best roads to ride in the Hill Country. Might help in your planning.

Good advice Trip. I'm sure you remember the first time we rode the Hill Country together the first week of April 2010. It was cold that week. February would be tough Kurt.

Trip, what mapping software/tools did you use for the map-routes in your first link? I would be seriously interested in knowing. PM me is you don't mind. Thanks, Greg

If San Antonio weather is calling for around 45 low at night for a week stretch, would there be any ice in the hill country?

Yep... I remember Mitch! Problem is, when it's cold up there, one has to dress up like the Michelin man to get any relief from the cold.

Sure Greg.... no problem.... I use Microsoft Streets and Trips. I have the 2013 version. I map out everything then convert it to a jpeg and add any graphics I want. But MS Streets and Trips gives you an excellent distant measurement.

Sucky part of this is MS Streets and Trips 2013 has been discontinued and thus the price for that version on Amazon and others has gone sky high.

But, you can buy other versions fairly cheaply.
