oil seal under gas cap?

since I have had the nomad, 1600, I used to hear a whistle sound a few minutes after I shut the bike down. lately I do not hear the sound and a little rubber seal is gone from under the gas cap.

is this seal really necessary?

They only whistle in the hot weather, if its cool they won't. And if the seal is gone I'd leave it alone, unless you want it to whistle.

Check this site. I put the fix up years ago on stopping the whistle

I often wondered about that annoying, and sometimes embarrassing, whistle and if there was a way to stop it. Good info here, thanks Jllm02199
