Stereo upgrade options on Vaquero

I just rode to Vegas and back from Los Angeles (about 500 miles round trip) and learned that the stereo is pretty much useless on the freeway. I'm sure a larger windshield would help but I would like to upgrade the speakers and amp while retaining the stock head unit. My goal is for clearer sound on the freeway and better quality sound with a little bass while cruising around town.

Your suggestions on amps, speakers and adapters for 6.5 speakers are apppreciated.

Off topic - how do you reset the trip meter?

Thanks!

Hold the "Mode B" switch for more than 2 seconds and it will reset the miles to zero.

Also: if you push the "Mode A" switch for more than 2 seconds while the average mileage is displayed it will reset back to zero.

I still have the stock head unit. I have the speaker adapters from Randy Brewster and use the Polk 6.5" speakers. I use the iPod adapter wires in the glovebox with a 30-pin Bluetooth adapter attached to it. I also replaced the stock antennae with a shorter VMS aluminum sport one. Radio seems to have a little better reception. But I stream my music from my phone through the BT which seems to also amplify it at the same time. I have no trouble hearing my music at whatever speed on trips. This setup also allows me to use the GPS apps on my phone for directions.

Thanks. So additional amp is not needed? Do you have the original short windshield?

I installed the Alpine KTP-445U 4-channel Power Pack Amplifier, 6.5" adaptors from member OhioVoyager and 6.5" Hertz speakers and this combination works very well. I can hear the music with no problem at all at any speed. I have a tall windshield which probably makes a difference. I listen to my iPod, the radio and/or satellite radio and they all sound great. I originally installed 5.25" Hertz which performed well but I wanted a little bit more bass. I added a Harley trunk to my Vaquero (quick release) and will put the 5.25" speakers in that for a passengers enjoyment.

That Alpine amp not only adds much needed power but when compared to a head unit the power from a separate amp is of a much better quality.

I have Randy's adapters, Kicker 6 3/4" speakers, and a Clarion amp. This is on a Voyager, but I run a 12" windshield in the warmer months and the sound and sound quality over stock is amazing. I did have to trim the inside of his adapters a little for the 6 3/4 speakers, but is well worth it.

I have a clarion amp with the 6.5" adapters and Polk speakers. Works great on the Voyager. Here is my observations. I travel on the Hwy mostly back and forth to work generally between 120-130kph(75-80mph) What i have noticed is the faster you go obviously the more noise is generated. But also you will suffer sound cancelling as well. I know certain songs the sound I am hearing are missing instruments. Some songs I can not hear the guitars at speed. At speed you will have no bass, your volume will have to be turned up as you go faster and these little 6.5's can't handle the volume and the bass together. i have a bit of an advantage as I have rear speakers as well which help to fill in the sound. But remember these are bikes and not enclosed cars so you can not generate the Sound Pressure needed to create good bass. There is no SPL on a motorcycle. Just me thoughts, and I am no expert.
