Irate Rocker Case Cover Gasket

My kawa shop has told me that it is 10 hours of labor and they must break down the entire engine on my 1999 1500 nomad. Does this sound legit? Has anyone experienced this? Am I getting the run around?

Mine's leaking too. It's going to have to get a lot worse before I do anything about it though (other than wipe it off with a rag every couple days). I believe someone here just did the rocker cover gaskets recently. Might do a search for it. I think he did it himself. Might've been a 1600 but same difference. If I'm not mistaken they didn't have to actually remove the motor, but drop it down enough to get at the fasteners and gaskets.

My local dealership wanted 18 hours to change the rocker cover gaskets. That is why I did it myself. I took the motor out as the service manual explains.

They don't really have to break down the motor, its just a term they used.
In order to get the rocker cover off, you have to almost remove the motor from the frame. This means everything bolted to it has to come off, the mounts removed, and the motor can then be tilted somewhat in the frame so the rocker covers can clear the frame, and be removed.
Im my opinion ten hours is probably right in the ball park from start to finish for a job like that.

Just got all the parts in to do mine. I was going to do it before I left for Daytona on the 9th but now I'll wait till I get back. I'm afraid if I tear it apart now I may need something else and won't have time to order the parts and put it back together in time. I just cleaned it good and siliconed over the cam plugs again.

Just pulled my motor out completely to replace both gaskets. Is there anything else other than the gaskets themselves that i need to do job. ie. sealants or whatever. (kawmasukmi shop told me the gaskets is all, but also wasn't sure we were on the same page with MY meaning)

I would replace the 4 - 14043 oil screens while in there.

Black RTV or any extremely high quality silicone will work.

If all you remove is the chrome head cover you shouldn't need anything else except normal shop supply's, cleaners, towels, scraper, blades, etc.

What MAS Said! Just drop your motor out far enough to get to the covers, do it, put her back in.
I usually start about noon on a saturday, finished by 6pm....
Its not that hard after you've done it a couple of times....just have your manual ready for quick reference....
1st time, maybe 10 hours, 2nd time, about 8, takes me 6 but I have all the stuff to do it with....I just scoot it out enough to get at her good....and have at it.
