Post Catastrophic failure repairs done
Finally got my bike back after two months in the shop. Even though my Kawasaki warranty expired in September of last year, Kawasaki paid every dime of the slightly more than $4000.00 repair bill. When the failure occurred I only had 22,500 miles on it. They tell me that the front drive shaft bearing dried up, got hot enough to melt metal until it was rapid cooled by the engine oil which caused it to seize up while I was cruising at 70mph. Metal crunched and went flying, fire started, etc, etc. Supposedly Kawasaki fixed it for a couple of reasons. 1) I have, since day one been religious about my preventive maintenance schedules, and always had the dealer do it. I have always babied the bike. 2) Presumably Kawasaki has never heard of such an event and figured it to be a fluke anomaly that would buy them some good advertising (guess that is what I am doing right now). The bike is running well but seems to have lost some of its previous gas mileage characteristics. In my case pretty steady at 35 mpg with a normal cruise speed of 70mph pretty much all the time. They even replaced my battery because the original died while being in the shop for so long. If anyone is interested, I have the full list of replaced parts. I will be posting details on my website at www.rcmedic.com in the next week or two.

I am stunned they would cover the bill. I doubt Harley would even consider it had it been their bike.

Wow , your very lucky that they stood up and fixed it all for you. That would have been a tough on to eat on your own.

If anyone is interested, I have posted the three pages of parts that were used to repair the bike plus a slightly more longwinded version of the story at the top of the page. It is located at http://www.rcmedic.com/catastrophe.asp
