POG

A friend of mine is wanting to buy a 1999 Nomad how or can we tell if the POG has been replaced with out major disassembly. I am sure the information is here somewhere but not finding it.

Thanks

I don't think you can. You may be able to run the vin # through Kawasaki and find out, or go to Gadgets fixit sight and look it up, follow the disassembly until you get to the point where you will be able to see the teeth on the gear, then youll know.

All you have to do is take the side cover off and replace the gasket.

How many miles does it have on it? If it has 20,000 miles or so it has probably been replaced.

Well we called our Kawa dealer they searched the VIN does not show it was replaced buy Kawa. Mileage is approx 25000 i think. We will do more checking. I have given him the KawaNOW web address and Gadgets link and would expect him to show up before long.

Depending on the original owner there is a chance it has a Judges oil gear installed, therefore it wouldn't show up in the Kawasaki recall records.
Since Kawasaki stopped covering the gear under warranty, a Judges oil gear may be a more economical option if it does need replacing.

Good advice Steve if it hasn't been replaced yet. I would almost think it has but you never know.

I still don't understand why they would have put a plastic one in. I know it was a cost saving thing for Kawasaki. I owned a 1970 GTO and there was a lot of nylon in the timing chain. You could expect it to last about 60,000 miles which mine did and then a buddy and I replaced it with an all metal one.

They did it for many years on the earlier Vulcans without a problem, but the first Nomads started to show a high failure rate.

It is going to cost around $300 to replace a POG with Judge's gear; if you do the labor yourself. Might as well change the clutch spring and add Judge's washers too.
