Help with Battery

Ok, I previously confessed no to be much of a hand at working on MCs. (or anything else for that matter)

2007 Nomad

I am trying to connect the pig tail for my battery tender to the Nomad battery.

Seat is off (yes, even I can do that)

I can see and get to the positive post (red)

I can see but can not get to the neg. post (black)

Can if install the neg lead off the pig tail something other than the neg post?

Is 'yes' - I am looking at the metal strap across the battery.

If 'no' - any suggestions on how to get to the neg post??

Txs

Thank for all the advsie and suggestions and the PM. I did get the I-bolt on the - post and I was able to get both I-connectors on the + side. All is working.

Help with Battery

I'm surpised you can't get to the negative post on the battery. I'll have to pull my seat to look at how I have mine on.

Help with Battery

If I had smaller hands I might be able to.

And, I forgot to say, it is a 2007 Nomad

Help with Battery

I just changed my battery last week, maybe his battery is like my old one, both the new and the old were made by the same people and they have the same part number but the new one is about 1" shorter and a lot lighter than the old one and I couldn't get to the neg. post on my old battery with out a lot of work.

Help with Battery

I got a PM from Catusjak saying my suggestion should work.

So

A new problem - challenge

I back out the screw on the positive post so I could connect the positive lead of the pigtail

there was already one attachment to the positive post (I think it for the light bar).

So, when I attached the pig tail connector and tired to screw the positive screw back in I find out there is not enough length in the screw - that is it is now not long enough to "catch" and screw in.

So, this afternoon I will go to auto part store and see if I can find a longer screw

Help with Battery

I replied to your PM about this as well. Just use some non-metallic object to hold the nut up while you start the bolt.

Help with Battery

I keep some small zip ties in my saddlebag so when I try to reconnect the battery I slip a plastic zip tie through and pull the nut up while I start the bolt. Once the bolt catches I simply pull the zip tie out

Help with Battery

I would suggest a slightly longer bolt for both posts. I ran into the same problem when I attached the battery tender pigtail. You only need one about 1/8 inch longer. I now have a pigtail for the battery tender and a pigtail for the Slime air compressor. The same pigtail might have worked for both but I attached both since I now have the longer bolt. I picked mine up at the local Ace Hardware. I think they cost a total of about 20 cents.

Help with Battery

With any longer replacement bolts drop it in the battery holder connector with no nut in there, and make sure it doesn't hit the battery case plastic. If it just barely touches thats one thing, but if it has the bolt head sticking up anything over 1/64" grind it smaller and fix the thread.

If anyone goes and runs a bolt right smack into the battery cells I will laff and you will have a bad battery. Probably the lead holder would break before things got dangerous.

Help with Battery

If you follow the negative cable it goes down to a bolt on the frame that is fairly easy to get to and add connections.
