The bridge is open.

The new Hwy 93 bridge over the Colorado river at the Hoover Dam is now open. Crossed it last Saturday on the way to breakfast in AZ. It's over 800' above the water but the crossing was anti-climatic. There are 4 1/2 foot wind blocking walls on each side which effectively block the view more than the wind.

You have to take the road to the Dam from the Nevada side to get to the pedestrian bridge if you want a view. If you're going to the Dam the only access is from the NV side. The AZ side is completely closed down.

For most of you who don't know it was not unusual to take almost an hour to transit the Dam on a weekend due to security checks and tourists. Now it's no more than five minutes.

However, I'm sure it will be nasty when the winds kicks up though. Black Canyon has seen 100+ winds. Don't know how strong they would be 800' up but I have to guess a bit stronger. I noticed large electronic signs before the bridge that will probably be used to warn of high winds.

Looking down on the Dam. For comparison the white water marks on the canyon walls above the Dam are now 128' tall

The bridge is open.

Yeah I saw it opened the other day. I have been watching it closely over the years. I need to find time to ride up there and cross it on my Nomad. Probably be too long of a day if I tried a round trip, so I'll have to go up on a Saturday and come back on Sunday. The weather's about right to do it, too.

The bridge is open.

If I understand you correctly, the road that goes over the dam is now closed? Bummer if so, it was a beautiful road.

The bridge is open.

The last time I crossed the dam was last March. It was a Sunday afternoon and the traffic backup started before the NV security checkpoint. It took close to an hour to get across the dam and onto the highway on the AZ side.

The bridge is open.

Came across the bridge last night around 10pm. Got a late start from Chandler going to Las Vegas. Stan is right, kind of anti-climatic you can't see anything. A lot quicker than the traffic going through the dam. Temperature was around 60 degrees, kind of pleasant after the 100+ temperatures all summer. Not too much traffic for being late on a Sunday night. I'll be in Vegas for a couple of days loafing around then take a leisurely ride back to Chandler, probably in daylight.

You understand correctly. The road is open only from the NV side, across the Dam to the parking lots on the AZ side.

Got it. It would be a shame to close it completely. Thanks for the info.

Let me know how the loafing goes.

I haven't crossed the dam since I drove an 18 wheeler back in 1977. I saw a picture of the new bridge on Parade magazine. I think they named it for Pat Tilman and another guy. Can't recall his name. It looked really good and it was amazing the way it was built.

The bridge is open.

My trip to Las Vegas was fun this last week, the weather was nice and it was an easy ride. There is construction for ten miles south of Hoover Dam, posted speed limits are 25 to 45 mph. Going to Las Vegas Sunday night at 10pm nobody slowed below 65 mph regardless of the signs. Coming back yesterday with traffic, cop cars, and construction in full force it was 25 mph all ten miles. Did not stop at the dam the line was longer than I was willing to wait, I'll go another time.
