Fuel gauge

I usually keep the instrument cluster in the ‘clock’ selection.
While riding this past weekend I noticed the ‘low fuel’ indicator light was on but I still had 2 ‘bars’ on the level indicator..
I checked the mileage. 155 miles. I refueled and she took about 4 ½ gal. Normal. The ‘bars’ went to max.
Yesterday the low fuel indicator light came on with 3 ‘bars’ indicated.
I checked the mileage. 158 miles. I refueled and again about 4 ½ gal. Normal The ‘bars’ wet to max.
What’s happening to my fuel gauge?
The low fuel indicator light must operate independent of the level indicator. So it’s easy enough to work around the problem but it would be nice to at least understand what is happening.
Anybody got any input?

Thanks
Mike

Sounds very similar to what happened to mine. It was the fuel level sensor in the tank. Extended warranty covered it.

Buy a cheap stick on clock at a dollar store and stick it on your risers or some place easy to see.
Then set the instrument cluster to trip. Use that as a fuel gauge.
Forget you have fuel bars entirely.

Good thought. I check the time only on my way to work. When I'm just ridin' I'm not into time.

Mine did that for a couple of fill ups and then never did it again. Sticking float level ?
As stated, use the trip meter and look for gas around 180 to 200 kms (125miles).

Put a couple of ounces of marvel mystery oil in the next 2 tanks of gas.

That fixed mine.

My light will come on at different fuel levels, but take different amounts of fuel to fill the tank.

Try the MMO or even a healthy dose of Seafoam.

Let us know.

The fuel gauge on my 99 Nomad was always acting strange. So back in 01' I started using MMO all the time. I never have had the problem since. I also use it in the 03 Nomad and never seem to have the fuel and running problems other members have. Just an observation.

MMO is good stuff been around for years and years. It has a lot of uses.

It is also a very good air tool lubricant and a fraction of the cost of Snap On Tools air tool lube......

How much MMO are you putting in the tank? And how many times a season are you doing it?

I use it once a month I use 2 ounces to the tank.
That is what is recommended on the MMO bottle.

I use it everytime I fuel. I carry an old 8 oz Sta-bil bottle and use .4 oz to every gallon. I'm not trying to just occasionally lubricate the sending unit float. I want to lubricate the top of the motor and clean/lubricate the fuel system.
