Hairy

I hate when they put these things at the apex of a corner.

That sucks.

I am assuming they put out some signs warning of an upcoming cattle-guard.

Surely it's not a cattle guard as you can walk around it - look at the right side of the pic!
So what else could it be?

Yeah, you can see the end on the right
Can't be a cattle guard in the road? Never seen or heard of that.
What would be the point? If there in the road they're out.

It's like a bridge made out of round metal pipe.
Cows won't walk over it. They are used at the end of driveways.
That way you don't have to get out and open the gate.

Danimal - you say this like you've seen it many times - if so, what is it?

How can someone legally put something like that on a public road?

They have quite a few of those around this part of the country. Glad I haven't found the one that's on the corner.

Really, how high are they? Looks to be about 3-4 inches high in the pic.

It is a cattle guard. Very common out here in Arizona. We have lots of open range where cattle just wander and feed. The "guard" is typically made of railroad track and spaced just far enough apart that a cow would not try to walk on it (so they're not all that stupid). I can actually put my boot width-wise between the tracks so they're pretty far apart. It keeps the cows on the desired side of the area. These things are slippery even when dry. After a rain they're down right dangerous. Best to slow and try to hit them as close 90 degrees as possible. They are marked, but this one kinda surprised me. The sign was right next to the guard.

The slats are far enough apart that a cow would put its leg down between them. They don't like that and won't cross. We have plenty of those on different roads. Haven't seen many on highways around here. There are several in the black hills around Custer State Park.

CNC, they are even with the road. Damn easterner's.

There are cross braces running 90 degrees to the track pieces every couple feet to support it. Other than that, if the cow steps between the tracks it's about a 2' drop down. Think of it like a 2' deep box with a grid over it. I always thought cows were pretty stupid, but have to say I've never seen one even remotely close to a guard so they must work.

Joel's right. You don't often see them on a semi-major paved road such as this one. Usually on dirt ranch type roads.
