Need help !

2007 Vulcan Nomad 1600. Runs great, but there is a ticking noise that is driving me nuts and I need to get it fixed. louder when cold, ticks faster when movingfast, goes away sometime when warm and stops when I push in the clutch. Looking how to fix before I take it to the dealer for a expensive repair. May also just get loud pipes so I don't hear it if it's not major. planning a trip to North Carolina and need to make sure it's ok. I just got back from a 600 mile trip in the heat (over 100). Could the oil be thin and should I think about a heavier weight (ie 20 / 50 syn) ?

I think it the lifters you are hearing, mine does it sometimes as well. Some days the motor seems quite and other days it sounds like a rattle can.
They are a rather noisey motor to start with, try to get used to it, theres probably nothing wrong.

wouldn't the lifter still make the sound even if the clutch was pressed. I think it's the clutch basket or a loose spring, could that be it ?

As bad as I hate to say this Chris, our minds think alike.

Bapps, how many miles on your bike? You might try using 20W-50 or at least a mixture in the next oil change. Like Ring says it probably isn't anything to worry about but you never know. If we could hear it we might be able to help more. Find a good motorcycle shade tree mechanic and let them listen to it.

I had a 2008 Nomad with the same problem, it never got worse and never went away. For peace of mind take it to a good dealership and let them advise you.

I think the solenoids behind the right side dog bowl make that sound.
I removed mine as did many others on this forum.

It is, but when the dealer gets through with you that pinging will seem insignificant.

Now to give the evil sob devil dealerships their due, I stopped in a Kawa dealership in Homestead,FLA. at ten minute to closing time, and three young mechanics came out in the 100+ degree blazing hot parking lot, and diagnosed my ailing Beloved Nomad. They did this under the glaring, scornful gaze of their supervisor, and wouldn't accept any money.

Can you tell us which area it might be coming from Bapps?

It's only a noise. That is what I concluded from my 08 Nomad after the dealership told me it was the solenoids.
