Oil Drain Plug Crush Washer

Do y'all change this washer when you change your oil? If so, where do you buy it??

Thanks!

I don't drain the oil from the drain plug and neither should you.

Drain from the side drain. It's the 17mm on the side of the case about 3" from the drainplug.

Just be sure to put the screen in correctly if you remove it.

I changed the oil in my Nomad on schedule or early for 49,000 miles. Bought a new washer at my dealer somewhere in the 30,000 mile range, but never actually had trouble just re-using the same washer over and over. Contrary to dogma on this site, I always used the drain plug as indicated in the owner's manual. At this point, 50,000 miles on my ST1300, still using the original washer.

I have not changed mine personally, but when i service customer cars (I am a mechanic), I always replace the drain plug gasket as we do see them leak occasionally. Most auto part houses will carry a variety of drain plug washer diameters, so, your local parts house should have one. It's good to keep one handy as sometimes they will crack on reinstall.

The times that I've changed my oil from the bottom drain plug, I've replaced the crush washer with a new one. I had ordered several of these from cheapcycleparts.com at about 70 cents each along with some other things that I had ordered. I think the part number is 92065-097. Sometimes I do use the side location to change oil, just to check the screen for debris, which there usually is none.

I prefer the oil screen. I found some nasty particles in there a couple of weeks ago and posted pics on here. Seems a washer or some plastic had broken off somewhere but all good now. Too bad you cant get that bolt to move. I had to use some lube on mine and tap it a few times.

I don't think I've ever replaced the washer, even once. It doesn't leak so why change it.
If it does I'll dump the oil and change both the oil and the washer. I think that it has a lot to do with how tight you do the plug. I never tighten it down hard. It seems to tighten up somewhat through temp. or something, on it's own. JMO

The design of the crush washer is that it is a single-use item. Once it's been crushed it should not be reused. It's a fifty cent part.

Why not drain from both?

I hear you Scott but why???? If you don't have to. treat most things like that. If it ain't broken, why "fix" it??? That's just me my friend. Maybe the next time I'm in Lordco or Princess Auto I'll pick up some nylon washers to fit.
CLICK ! Did you hear that???? Something just clicked in the brain,.....

Maybe that's it !!! My washers are not "crush washers" in the sense that they're metal and a typical exhaust type "crush washer". Like I said, mine's a nylon material one side and metal on the other. Kind'a bonded together.

I just changed the oil in my wife's 900 every other time I use the screen plug. This time I used the regular plug and the dang crush washer wasn't on the plug so I figured it was stuck on the bottom of the motor. I finished changing the oil and filter. Put in new oil then dumped the drain oil back into the oil jugs. Well wouldn't you know it their in the bottom of the drain pan was my crush washer.
I went to my local Honda dealer and bought 6 crush washers @ :50 a piece. Went home drained the oil cause it was leaking and put on a new washer.

I drain oil from both drain plugs on my vaquero am I just to use one drain plug. I seem to get more oil out using both and I'll try the side screen next time just to see.

I think I have 1 or 2 washers if anybody wants them I will send them to you. I don't have my 03 Nomad anymore. I think I have an exhaust gasket too.

Use a torque wrench, oil drain plug gets torqued to 15 ft lb and the oil screen plug is the same 15 ft lb.
