Key Switch problem

Hey folks,

I have an '03 Nomad that is having key switch problems. Many times when I turn the key on, nothing happens but if I push in on the key when it's in the On position then the fuel pump starts, if I let pressure off the fuel pump stops. If I mess with it enough it will eventually stay on. Anyone have any experience with this situation?

Not sure if your 03 is the same switch setup but my 07 was acting up last summer with similar symptoms. I was able to remove the electrical switch from the cylinder assembly, take it apart, clean contacts and repair a spring inside, and slap it back together. If you do a search of my posts, I threw a couple of pics up there as well to show the switch and contact unit.

Initial thought, corroded or worn contacts. You could try WD-40 or some other non conductive spray. Also, pull the speedo assembly and check for a loose connection at the ignition switch .

Mines an '03 FI so the switch is down on the frame. I will do as you mentioned and remove it from the bike and take it apart to check things out. It's very simple inside so should be able to do something with it.

Probably similar to the newer ones even though it's down on the frame rather than up top. Not too difficult. just be careful disassembling the electrical part of the switch, to get to the contacts, that no springs go flying into never-never land.

the switch is worn inside, if you take it apart you can usually fix it so it works for a while.

Ok, so it's now working again. I removed the switch and opened and found one of the 3 spring loaded contacts was stuck down. Took a bit to get it working again but it's good for now. As mentioned I doubt it's a permanent fix. Might have to find another one off flea bay or something.

You might touch base with Joe at Chuckster Customs. He knows a bunch about the switch and has a hech of a deal on a very clean relocation switch. Thanks for your time

There are relocation kits available. I have a new switch I bought a couple of years back. New price about $95, the chrome isn't great on it but it could be had for $45 shipped.
