Surging

Started to have a little surging about a month ago and sometimes the engine would even die when letting off the throttle. A week ago the low speed surging made the bike almost uncontrollable. At this point I deciding maybe I should look into this.

I had my suspicions that the gas in the bike sat too long and was clogging the injectors or even the throttle bores needed cleaning. The bores were squeaky clean. The bike has not been ridden too much this Winter.

I did a quick search of this Forum and all discussions pointed to a vacuum leak. I didn't have a propane torch but I did have a MAPP gas torch. With the engine idling and surging from almost dying to regular idle speed I flooded the whole engine from the top down with MAPP gas. Nothing changed.

A couple days later I bought some fuel injection cleaner. I already had a full tank of fresh gas and adding the cleaner in the prescribed amount. Started it up and let it run about a half hour until it was purring like a kitten. A quick 2 mile trip around the block confirmed all was well.

Last Sat. & Sun each had a 60 mile trip and it ran like it was supposed to. Another fill-up and another dose of cleaner and it's ready for next weekend. The moral of the story is "Ride the damn Bike" or get rid of it.

That being said, it's for sale.

Seems like a great deal for a ready-to-ride bike. Do you have any hp figures per the fuel module dyna run? I have the same bike, although not equipped to your level.

I doubt it's fixed. That is a classic vac leak called Hunting. If it is fixed then the throttle plates must have been filthy and were moving, being unable to seat. but i doubt that too. mapp gas will work. But you point the nozzels at places and give a little gas to the area seeking a change in RPM. At first if you want to see what you might be looking for in rpm you can point the gas straight into the intake with the filters off. But you don't use a lot of gas.

WD-40 used to be 'The Tool' for this as you could spray a shot at a vac line end, cap, intake gaskets T plate seals and etc , and if there was no change move on. When you hit one of these and there was a change you had the problem nailed.

Also cracked loose brittle capped off ports and both ends of any vac lines, pluf the O rings that hold the intake on the jugs.

Mac, the bores were clean. It runs like new. It went from a surging to a smooth idle in 30 minutes and has run perfectly since. If there was a leak it sealed itself.

Hunting leaks are that way. They can almost fix themselves sometimes. When that happens it can tend to be a manifold gasket and or a O Ring. What happens is cold and heating cycles open and close, so a cold engine may have that effect, but once it is warm the metal expands and the leak is stopped a while. You could get lucky.

Another bike is three years out. So many opportunities have presented themselves in the last six months the wind in my face will have to wait. Since last November I've put only 500 miles on the bike and 120 of them were last weekend. Only so many hours in a day.

That's the plan. Sorta. When that time comes I've got a gig set up to consult about 3 months a year. So it would be about 3 weeks off for every week at it. Should have time to knock some miles down then.
