Cruise control

talked about this before but back from another 2000 mile trip and cruise is not only cutting off, then immediately back on, but accelerated briefly, then back to setting.... i mean full throttle up for half second ! anyone else see this.. only has happened about 8 times in 7k miles and always in 5th or OD at hiway speed.. dealer says, of course, bring in, we'll check it... but they have not seen this on the 1700's... i just shudder to think they will start tearin down bike not knowin what to look for but......anybody ?

It happened to me on 2 separate ocassions. Scared the bejeebers out of me because once I was going 75 mph and had a car on my ass. Florida drivers.

Did a 300 mile ride last week and used cruise extensively and it never happened again.

I have seen this. It seems to happen when the rear wheel does a bit of a hop over a bump. I think the speed sensor thinks the bike is going too fast and chops the throttle...then says oh crap and gets back on it.

Very un-nerving.

Sounds like this issue needs to be a recall. Full throttle for half a second !

First thought is the switch under the brake pedal. There are two, the bigger one on top is for the brake lights. Underneath is a little micro switch. Clean it then hit it with some WD 40.

Second thought is the switch contacts on the handlebar. I had an issue with my turn signal switch not always working. Hit that with some WD 40, been fine ever since.

The next time it won't set, pull into a parking lot and run the onboard diagnostic. Anything else is just guessing.
With the ignition off, select 1st gear, press and hold the S button, turn ignition on. CHEC will be displayed along with a flashing number, 1 is throttle switch, 2 is rear brake, 3 is front brake, 4 is clutch, 5 is neutral, 6 is set button, 7 is resume.
The suspect switch should be cleaned or replaced.

Out of those 7 options, I've had only #2 or #4 flash, so I carry a spare clutch switch and rear brake switch with me when travelling. Needed the brake switch last month enroute from Alaska. Both are easy to change (except for keeping track of the tiny screws), not expensive, and take up almost no space.

Good idea and great info. Alaska, that sounds like nice trip. Cheers.

bike back from dealer yesterday.. per kaw, they said they found excessive free play in throttle and adjusted ( oh well ) and if problem persists kaw says they will replace throttle body and ecm as, according to them, that is only remaining possible scenerio.. just wanted to fill everybody in.. i hear it's a rare problem but it is happening on some 1700's nonetheless... please call kaw if any of you have had this happen to you so we can get this resolved ( hopefully under factory warranty )

I have a 2011 voyager that currently has 115,000 km's (69,000 miles) and I have had the cruise cut out and back on again just as you described about 15 times over that time frame. I even talked to a Kawi Service engineer from Kawi Canada about it and got the typical "We have never heard of that problem". He wasn't even the least bit interested in hearing me out even when I reminded him it could be a huge safety issue. The first time I had my wife with me and it happened she slapped me thinking I was goofing around. As I told her when I finally got stopped that if the cruise didn't cause an accident her hitting me would.

I found last year going through rain or muddy conditions the cruise control did not operate properly last year and that if bike got muddy enough it even failed to work seams the sensor had some dirt on it. A through wash fixed the problem and never had a problem since.

My bike has had the ecm and throttle body replaced, and the throttle cables, throttle housing, injectors, fuel pump and intake manifold. The sudden speed drop then acceleration still occurs, not very often but it's still there.
