New thoughts on Dyna Beads

So I recently did a tire swap on my Harley to cure a bad Dunlop front tire that had a flat spot. In doing so, I Installed a new set of Michelin Commander II's since they work so well on my Nomad. So since then , I have had a weird vibration in the bars above 70mph. I checked everything I could imagine, loose bolts, exhaust touching, fork stem bearings, brake etc. After no results, I started reading up on the dyna beads. Seems that a number of guys have found that above 70mph they get that same vibration, it seems harmonics generated by some bikes get amplified by the beads causing the vibration in the bars.

So I pulled the front wheel, and removed the beads. Then rebalanced on my old school balance stand. Only needed 1/4 oz. of weight. Re- installed the wheel and wah-lah smooth as butter..... One other thought that came to mind was that since the tire only required 1/4 oz. maybe since I had the recommended 2oz. of beads in the tire it made things worse. ???

Not sure what size tire you have on the Harley, but on the 750 Vulcan it had a pretty small front tire and still recommended 1oz of beads. That's all I have in the Vaq's front tire as well.

I have the same tires on my Vic and used the beads. I haven't noticed a vibration Dave. The new II's that are on now don't have them and balanced the conventional way. No difference. First I've heard of using beads and having issues.

I use beads in my Nomad and they work just fine. maybe it's a Harley thing. The guy at the HD dealer looked at me funny when I told him to put them in my tires.. Anyway... problem solved..

That's how mine are. At 112mph yesterday on the way to work and it was smooth as could be.

Depends on tire width. 130 and wider take 2oz. 200 and wider take 3oz..

You're balancing more than the tire. The wheel and what's attached spin too. Could be that the HD has a more uniform setup that doesn't need as much weight to balance. You could have baked off to 1 oz and see how it did. That said, what you did works best.
