Newbie Questions
Hello Everyone
I am a older woman who has always wanted a Nomad. I have found that I need a 2002 or 2003 to fit me better. My riding life has included 5 Harleys and a Goldwing Trike. I just sold the Trike. My ego at senior age still wants to ride so a Nomad would work well for me. Its been a long time since I was on this forum and can't remember what part replacement was recommended for older Nomads. I'm looking at bikes with less than 35K miles, so what would one need to keep it on the road, besides the normal fluid changes, tires, etc? Thanks Karen Login or Register to Remove Ads |

I think the "part" you are thinking of is the POG plastic oil gear.
But it was not used on the 02 or 03 you are looking for. It was on the 99 and some 2000 if I remember correctly. What is it about the 02/03 bikes you say fit you better?

Well, the 2002/2003's are nice bikes, I have a 2001. The POG's were on the 1999's and some of the 2000's, by 2001 they were history.
Just get yourself a 2002/2003 thats been taken care of and you'll be ok. After purchase, have all the fluids changed, have the pads on the disc brakes checked, check the voltage on the battery while running to see if charging system is up to snuff.... As a older woman rider, I was a Harley Dealer Mechanic for 25+ years, I'd got bitten by the Nomad bug back in the early 2000's, sold my ElectraGlide, started riding and wrenching on the Nomads and Vulcans.... Great bikes, one of the most dependable out there, even in 15+ years form....I know alot of 01's that ride coast to coast every year.... To me, the Nomads seem to carry their weight down lower, plus I have mine lowered with the LowLife Air Shock System, along with lowered front end....alot easier on my knees....

Thanks everyone, I have ridden a 02 some years ago. And I loved the Gold color, silly I know. I did find that after 05 the bike was wider and a little harder for me to get my feet flat. Oh, I gave up on HD due to the no customer support even with extended warranty. I hated how hot the newer bikes are. As far as the Honda with a Motor Trike kit, it was beautiful and wonderful to ride. But life has demanded I sell it to add windows to my house and a few other things. I could buy an older HD but I don't want the head aches I have learned and suffered through for 27 + years of owning them.
DragonLady, I am interested in the lowering system you have used. What kit was used to lower the front tubes? Thanks Karen

Welcome back to the forum ... Loving the gold color is not that silly. I ride a 2002 Nomad and love it. In fact it was the color that drew me to it. I just finished a 2300 mile tour this last week on it, that included Washington, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Several of the days were 400 to 500 mile days. My might Nomad just purred along effortlessly.
Good luck with your quest to find your perfect Nomad..

I've never had a harley, but can't think of anything better than my 12 Nomad. Thanks fir confirming I don't need hd, even after riding 45 years.

I'm still enjoying my '03 and think the Nomads are great bikes. If you buy one with low miles like you suggested, then the complete maintenance list is a great place to start to know it is done right and when it was last done.
If higher miles, then maybe cam chain extenders or clutch spring, but it might not need those items yet. Happy shopping.
