I may defect for a KLR 650
While on my cross country trip I ran across several dual sport riders. One guy that was camped in the same S.P. in Colorado was riding a KLR 650 on dirt roads only, in the western US. He was one 'whipped puppy' after 320 miles but having a ball. 180 degrees opposite of our riding, but I'm intrigued enough to investigate swapping out my 1100 Shadow (will keep the Nomad) for a dual sport. It expands the options by traveling on dirt as well as asphalt. Any dual sporters in our group?? Not for you old guys over 40 I suspect? Buck

I may defect for a KLR 650
My last one was a Honda XL350, and that was over 20 years ago.
A KLR650 is so cheap and reliable that you shouldn't pass it up if you're looking for fun in the forest. |

I may defect for a KLR 650
I have long considered a V-Strom 650 or 1000 adventure bike for a second ride. Where I live there are so many dirt great dirt roads that I am always tempted with. Kind of like the idea of having something to ride to work when there is the threat of rain for days on end. That and all you have to do is hose it off and its clean again.

I may defect for a KLR 650
I owned a KLR 650 and did not keep it very long. It was one of the tallest bikes I have ridden. I am 5'10" and felt the bike was too tall for me. Now I admit, I am nearly 60 years old. The KLR seemed too heavy while in the dirt and rocks, yet too light while on the highway. I came to the conclusion that dual sport meant, not right for either situation.

I've had one for many years - first one was the Original 1984 600cc that was more Dirt Bike than Dual Purpose - now a 1991 650cc - it's not that tall? I'm only 5'6" and I still touch the ground sorta!http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...MVC-008S-1.jpg

I would love to have one. I don't know about back east, but out here in the west you could travel for years without running out of new dirt roads to explore.
I need six different bikes, and the KLR coulc be one of them. |

LOL....
For these cars I could get maybe 4 used scooters. A couple of them would have to be well used. I do plan to sell two of them and also a tractor & buy a new car and a used bike. |

Personally, every dual sport I've ridden - including the KLR - you have a sub-par street bike and sub-par dirt bike. Just buy a nice four stroke dirt bike and call it good.

That's OK if you don't have to trailer it around all the time just to ride it.
I think if you're more interested in the adventure of it all than in the motorcycle strictly as a toy to romp around on, the dual purpose bike fills an important niche. |

Barb and I bought a couple DL650's (V-Stroms) last year and we've been exploring dirt roads all over the SW....you can see some pics at the "Rides" album in the Photobucket link: http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v2...ree/Escalante/
We love the WeeStroms... |
