3D printed oil cap tool adapter

In case anyone is interested I made a 3D printed tool adapter to help remove the aftermarket oil cap on my 2001 Nomad 1500FI. You may have this same cap so maybe this would be of some interest to you.

Here is the link to the file on Thingiverse in case anyone wants to make one.

I bought an oil cap from Ebay that said 'Vulcan' on it last year when I did an oil change. This year I tried to take it off and it was really stuck to the engine. Unfortunately this cap doesn't have any flats or other tool features; it is meant to be removed by hand. I ended up putting a towel over it and unscrewing it with channel lock pliers. That lead to the creation of this tool adapter. It fits over the oil cap and allows me to use an 18 mm socket wrench to loosen/tighten this cap.

I bought the cap from Ebay. It was item 391434049469

Clever stuff for sure. But i cant imagine, why you would ever need to replace the original cap.

Good question...I am not the original owner of this bike. I think I might be the 3rd owner. Somewhere along the way the original cap got really buggered up...the slot was really worn out with chrome chipping off of it. So I wanted to replace it with something that looked a little nicer. What I didn't consider is how it isn't really possible to align the word 'Vulcan' with the bike...so it is always off at some weird angle or upside down. And I didn't consider that it would be nice to have some tool flats for a wrench or socket.

I think it I were to choose a new one I would pick one of those caps that has the ridge that comes out of the top of it so I could get a wrench on it if need be.

Put another rubber washer on it. Maybe the Vulcan, will line up with a bit more "give" in it. Also, if you smear oil on the washers, they wont stick the cap on again. Same principle, as the washer/seal on the oil fiter
