My Metzlers

I bought some new 880's a couple weeks ago. About 200 miles later they started to make noise and vibrate when I lean the bike either way. After 1500 miles the tires were getting worse so today on the way home I stopped at the dealer and told them about the problem. I bought the tires from them because they had they same price on tires as the internet.

They took it for a ride, looked at the back tire and it was cupping. The tire pressure was exactly where it was supposed to be. I'm glad because I figured they may use that to get out of fixing it.

They called Metzler and got the ok to return them. Apparently I'm not the only one with this issue. They are having problems with some of the Metzler's 880's they got in.

Just a heads up in case anyone else has this issue.

Mike.

My last 2 Metzelers done pretty much the same, that's why on my last set of tires I tried the Avon Cobras. I haven't put but about 1200 miles on them, but they still ride remarkably well. I'm VERY impressed with the Cobras.

I returned a Metzler radial front (purchased from Dennis Kirk) for the same reason. Replaced with Avon Cobra. Much better tire.

12K on an 880 (rear,160) and still riding smooth with about 3/32 tread left in the middle, many of those miles were two-up. Can't ask for much better than that. Front 880 not holding up as well, still running smooth but a little less tread left than the rear with same miles, that's a little strange.

I've had problem with the Metzlers too. Same deal, started with noticing a vibration when I change lanes. Checked it out and it had a raised area all the way around the tire, left of center.
I got it at Texas Power Sports. I found out, if you have a problem with a tire, it has to be returned to where you bought it. I didn't want to ride back to Austin, so I bought one in Midland. Had to pay UPS to ship the bad tire back to Austin. Took about 3 months before I could get anything straightened out. By then I needed a new front tire and Glen at Texas Power Sports swapped one out for me. I had him put a Dunlop on the front. Now the Metzler I got in Midland is trying to do the same thing as the other with only about 2500 miles. No more Metz for me.

I have about 7000 on my Metzlers and they are both worn out. Never again.

I have used Metzlers exclusively for the past 12 years and rarely have any issues to complain about. I always keep the air pressure at the max psi for longer life.

EMU, that brings up another point I forgot to mention. After the service guy checked my pressure in the tires he told me it would be better to run them 36F 48R according to some book he was looking at.

I typically ran my tires 36F 42R

I am with "doc" on this. It seems about a year ago the Metz's were the choice -- now seems like everyone posting here doesn't like them. That's a bit confusing.

Maybe what OP said is the problem. I do recall someone saying that sometimes "old" tires are being sold -- which can cause "issues" based on that -- but I am not a tire-expert.

I trust the mechanic I use and followed his advice on my tire replacement -- he had me put a Metz on the front. This was late in last season and the handling and cornering vastly improved for me.

I will keep an eye on the "wear" issue though and post later if I have the same problems as mentioned here. Thus far I have not seen any problems though.

I seen a wore out rear Metzler once, but it wasn't one of mine. The fronts were always good for 16,500 miles. I have 13,000 on my front E-3 and it still looks new.
