Paint and ABS Plastic Repair Question

I have a 2005 Blue - Silver 1600 Nomad. My questions are, where can I get the blue and silver paint that will match my bike? I am going to try and paint the trunk myself.

Also, I have to repair a couple of cracks in the bottom of the trunk (an area that will not be seen) any suggestions? Is there such a thing as an ABS repair kit? If so, where can I get one CHEAP

Thanks!
John

Paint and ABS Plastic Repair Question

Most any hardware store should have a fiberglass repair kit in stock, and most any sort of boat supplies should too. A basic kit will have maybe a pint of resin, kicker for it, and that's about it. You will need other tools like sharp shears, disposable paint brushes NOT FOAM, maybe a roller made for rolling out glass cloth or matt, which looks about like any roller, but will have disk like beads instead.

You should wear gloves and eye protection, and use Acetone for any cleaning up.

You want 0 of any of these chems in your eyes!

i don't know where to get this paint.

Paint and ABS Plastic Repair Question

My paint came from the local automotive paint supply store. I carried one of my saddlebags in, and he matched both colors perfectly. The blue was a little different in color, but after it fully cured (4-6 weeks), it's an exact match. And the cost is 1/2 of what color-rite was going to charge. The paint that I got was the PPG paint, easy to use.

Paint and ABS Plastic Repair Question

VulcanE's solution is probably your best bet. Color-Rite has the exact factory paint, but it is stupid expensive.

You're too nice of a guy, AG. I'd say "criminally expensive".

You may be on to something here.

After taking the trunk apart, I found that the eBay seller I purchased it from late last year neglected to tell me a few things about the trunk. It has had Fiberglas repairs before that were all hidden behind hardware. And the bottom of the trunk was cracked. I got it cheap enough that I'm not real upset about it, but, it would have been nice to know up front ::)

I said all that to say that the Krylon might not be a bad option to make this trunk do until I can get into a Tour Pack style trunk later on.

What Krylon Colors match the 2005 Blue - Silver?

Thanks!
John

I'm also working on some touch-up for my Nomad. I went with the Color-Rite and the paints are an exact match. I agree with others that they're stupid expensive, but seein's how I'm color-blind, I need the extra assistance.

I just got the last coats on last night. Now to wait 5 days till I can wet-sand it.

Paint and ABS Plastic Repair Question

Be positive that it is fiberglass before doing repairs. The "genius" that I bougt mine from used a fiberglass repair kit to fix the cracks in the bottom. Too bad is was made of ABS plastic and I was able to peel the fiberglass patching off like it was cheap scotch tape.

What would you use on ABS plastic to repair a crack?

Paint and ABS Plastic Repair Question

Run down to the hardware store and buy ABS cement. It is the stuff they use to glue black sewer pipe together. It will actually melt crack back together and will be stronger than before. I had many cracks that I repaired on mine. If it is ABS I can be of a little more help but I wont go into detail here cause it gets long. It is sandable and paintable as well.
